Subsequently, the process of identifying and recruiting potential farmer leaders who had the necessary leadership qualities was initiated. MOPA is operating in a regional structure where farmers are allocated in to 6 regions namely; Central, Uva, Wayamba, DownSouth, North East & Western. During the next phase, producers from all regions are mobilized on concepts and procedures of organic agriculture, and organized into societies named as ‘blocks’ according to their geographical distribution. Due to the diligent & tireless efforts of everyone involved, in August 2010 Marginalized Organic Producers' Association (MOPA) started its journey towards becoming the phenomenon it is today. Currently, over 10,000 MOPA producers are ambitiously seeking their way towards sustainability, using fair-trade practices as means to this end.
Today, MOPA is an organization that consists integrated producer societies established by the marginalized producers and workers from small biodynamic estates. “Marginalized” producers are the small and medium scale producers who undergo difficulties in obtaining a justifiable price for their produce in the market without the interference of a middleman. Now, as part of a certified organic & fairtrade producer organization, they are dedicated to environmentally friendly farming practices, respecting the local ecological ethics, which enriches the soil structure and uplifts the bio diversity in farmlands, thereby increasing the productivity. With established producer societies around the country, their outreach covers 24,400 acres to date, with over 10,050 farmer families as beneficiaries of which most of the family members are involved in farming either full time or part-time, and the women farmers are encouraged to join these projects, to support the family income. This makes MOPA one of the biggest small farmer groups in Asia. MOPA flocks and guides these farming communities with the genuine intent of bringing the producers and sophisticated end-consumer closer together, while encouraging the sustainable farming practices and enhancing organic production.
